Robert Dresner

Robert DresnerI grew up in the Bronx, across the street from the Bronx Zoo and the New York Botanical Gardens. It was a good place to live and a great place to leave. I had a nice family, but I was the youngest of three boys and the house always seemed to be in turmoil. I couldn’t wait to leave home.

Following my graduation from the University of Oklahoma, I went to India, thinking I could find God. I traveled overland, determined to learn about the world through a process of osmosis, absorbing what I could when I wasn’t falling victim to my own naiveté. I spent nearly four years east of logic, asking a remarkable assortment of wise men and charlatans a lot of questions about the nature of human consciousness.

The answers boiled to down to one immutable fact: God had to find me. So I returned to America and settled in Colorado, where I began to write. In fact, I wrote six novels, making a few half-hearted attempts to sell them from time to time, never learning grammar, hardly realizing that writing a novel required two distinct talents: finding the words and crafting a story.

It took many years until I took a lesson in grammar, until the two talents matured into one smoother voice. With great effort, and with the loving support of family and friends, I finally realized my dream by publishing two novels in 2009 to remarkable reviews. It’s amazing how life can whittle away the whittler and even us all out in the long run; how I spent my youth in search of something miraculous, and wound up gawking at the magic and mystery of middle age—preparing to publish my next four novels!
