Variant

C–19

“How are you feeling?” we are often asked.

And we draw an uneven breath and sigh, “Okay, I guess. Better, but I just don’t feel the same.”

Variant is a story about not feeling the same; about becoming different, as a result of having covid-19 for a length of time and not knowing why.

It is a creative journal recounting one year in the life of the dreaded virus in my body and in my mind. The story is intense and far reaching—if only because this virus has affected every aspect of our lives, and because our response to this medical emergency has been so terribly mishandled. Too many of us have already been infected, and far too many of us have died.

There’s a lot of anger and frustration in this story, and sadness, and gratitude for the help and support I did receive—even some humor. And there is a lot written about aspects of this virus that are grossly under-reported:

Why do so many of the infected feel different? Why don’t we have a true and common sense of healing? Is it physical, emotional, psychological—because we are not truly and deeply healed? Or something else?

I believe it is something else.
